Curriculum Purpose
Our curriculum advances children’s knowledge of the world by embracing the rich diversity of our school community to prepare them for the challenges and opportunities of modern life.
Curriculum Rationale
Our Music curriculum is planned carefully using the Sing Up scheme of work which puts singing at the heart of musical learning. Singing is one of the most positive forms of human activity, supporting physical, mental, emotional and social health, as well as individual development in the same areas. Successful singing is important because it builds self-confidence, promotes self-esteem, always engages the emotions, promotes social inclusion, supports social skill development, and enables young people of different ages and abilities to come together successfully to create something special in the arts. Sing Up uses the Dalcroze method: using movement, song and creativity to enhance musicianship. Research shows that incorporating Dalcroze method practice into music teaching helps pupils improve their co-ordination, concentration, auditory memory, communication, and expression. Musical concepts are explored through making music rather than just considering them theoretically. The Sing Up Scheme is delivered alongside whole class instrumental topics to ensure that the aims from the National Curriculum are met:
- perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians.
- learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others, have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, use technology appropriately and have the opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence.
- understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including through the inter-related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations
