Our Knowledge-based Curriculum
Curriculum Purpose
Our curriculum advances children’s knowledge of the world by embracing the rich diversity of our school community to prepare them for the challenges and opportunities of modern life.
At Sudbury Primary School we have carefully designed our curriculum to ensure that it is enriched with engaging purposeful and quality learning experiences. Our curriculum provides broad and balanced opportunities which aim to drive a life-long love of learning as well as positive learning behaviours which help our children to grow as individuals as well as learners.
Our knowledge-based curriculum is designed so our children learn discrete subjects through a project theme. They provide exciting and motivating learning activities that make links between subjects that will be transferred to their long-term memory.
Our knowledge-based curriculum is underpinned with child-centred pedagogy which we refer to:
Engage
We hook our children in with a memorable experience.
We set the scene and provide the context for learning.
We spark children’s curiosity using interesting starting points.
Develop
We explore themes, concepts and facts for deeper understanding and knowledge.
We demonstrate new skills and allow time for consolidation.
We provide creative opportunities for making and doing.
Innovate and Share
We provide rich and stimulating scenarios that encourage creative thinking.
We enable children to apply previously learned skills.
We provide opportunities for collaborative working, problem solving, enterprise and independent thinking.
Express
We provide an environment for reflective discussion at the end of their project.
We create opportunities for shared evaluation.
We celebrate and share children’s success and identify next steps.
